Adapting Fitness Activities

As you age, chronic conditions such as visual or hearing problems, arthritis, back problems, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking and diabetes may require modification of your exercise program. For example, if you have bad arthritis you might consider exercising in a pool. You will get the same cardiovascular benefits and improve your strength and balance. There are "aquacise" classes at many YMCA where you can learn how to exercise safely and effectively. Click on the link to see how exercise can be modified for people with different disabilities and health conditions.

You don't have to join a health club.

Home exercise programs are a safe, low-cost and effective method for increasing physical activity among older persons, including those with disabilities. The critical component is compliance. If you or your client are using exercise equipment such as a treadmill, stationary bicycle or stairmaster, consider putting a television, VCR or Hi Fi in the room to maintain interest in exercising.
