Cough, Cold, and Allergy Medications used to treat the common cold and allergies can be readily obtained without a prescription over-the-counter (OTC). Allergic and cold symptoms include sneezing, runny nose, dry or sore throat and mucous production in the airways. Over-the-counter products can offer temporary relief from cold and allergic symptoms however they do contain ingredients which the elderly may be sensitive to, particularly those with co-existing disease states. For example, a cough and cold elixir can include an antihistamine, decongestant, sugar and alcohol. The alcohol content in most products is usually limited and would not clinically produce a significant drug interaction, however some products may have as much as 40% alcohol which could contribute to excess sedation, especially if other sedating medications are used. The sugar content may also be too high in some products and substantially effect blood glucose in hard to control diabetic patients. Alcohol and sugar free products are available and should be utilized whenever available.
