Fluorides

Fluoride therapy, initially recognized as beneficial only for caries protection in children, has been shown to be effective for adults. Even exposed root surfaces gain significant mineralization when exposed to fluoride. (REF) Greater benefits can be obtained from frequent exposure to low concentrations of fluoride than from occasional exposure to higher concentrations.

Fluoridation of public water is the least expensive and most effective way to prevent dental decay in a general population. Drinking water that contains as little as 1 part per million fluoride can prevent caries. Those whose drinking water is fluoride deficient should be sure to use toothpaste with fluoride to protect against caries.

Individuals with moderate to high caries risk (i.e. unable to perform optimal oral home care, affected by a dry mouth, or with a low oral pH due to gastric acid reflux) can benefit from fluoride rinses or more concentrated fluoride gels. When selecting a fluoride supplement it is important to consider existing oral conditions, as acidic fluoride formulations may cause damage both to composite and porcelain restorations as well as it may sting and burn a dry mouth.
