Other Localized Conditions of the Mouth
Ulcerative lesions are the most common type of soft tissue
changes seen in elderly patients. Ulcerations may be caused by chronic
conditions (e.g. lupus erythematosis), viral infections (e.g., herpes
zoster), or trauma. Non-ulcerative white lesions of oral soft tissue
are seen with some frequency in the elderly and are called leukoplakia
when intraoral and actinic keratosis when found on the lips. The photos
below show what white lesions look like.

Tip: If you have a lesion in your mouth, see
your doctor or dentist to be sure it is not the first stages
of oral cancer.
